We all love a good dungeon crawler. But this weekend at PAX West, I got to experience Soundfall, which will have you tapping your toes as you slash foes. I welcomed the opportunity to strap on headphones and drown out the convention as I got into the rhythm of the game.
You play as Melody, a talented young audiophile mysteriously transported to Symphonia, a world where music comes to life. You’ll befriend endearing allies, wield powerful abilities and legendary weapons against a horde of malicious adversaries as you race to halt the return of an unfathomable darkness, Discord.
Alone or with a co-player, you slash and dash your way through dungeons to the beat of the music. Time your slash to the beat, and it strikes with much greater force, and if you miss the beat, you can actually fail a dash and suffer the consequences.
Not only is your movement and attacks tied to the music, but the levels and enemy types and placement are procedurally generated based on the individual track. All of this design folds together to create a unique experience that truly feels tied to the music.
Soundfall will release on PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch in 2019.
